Introduction with Lead	Excellent Writer has more than 3 sentences in this introduction. The lead sentence related to the topic, and also engages the reader because of the spark or hook!	Average 6 or more interesting facts presented about the topic. These are common known facts.	Needs Improvement Only one sentence and there is little thought put into the lead for this introduction. This is nothing more than common knowledge.
Sentence Fluency	Excellent Rhythm and flow feel natural. Varied sentence length and structure invites expressive reading.	Average Attempts compound and complex sentences. Sentences have different beginnings.	Needs Improvement Choppy, incomplete or rambling sentences. Oral reading not possible. Repetitive.
Conventions	Excellent No spelling errors. Accurate punctuation and no grammar errors.	Average 3-5 spelling errors. 1-2 punctuation, grammar, or capitalization errors.	Needs Improvement 7 or more spelling errors. More than 6 punctuation, capitalization and grammar errors.
