Main Topic	Needs Improvement Student uses key words at the beginning of their writing.	Fair Student includes a topic sentence as their first sentence.	Good Student uses a good topic sentence which supports the main idea (may be located anywhere within first paragraph)	Outstanding Student uses a well-stated topic sentence which strongly reflects main idea.
Paragraph: Organization of text Sentence structure	Needs Improvement Student uses only one paragraph. Many sentences are considered fragments and/or run-on.	Fair Student uses separate paragraphs for supporting ideas. There are few sentence fragments and/or run-on sentences.	Good Student groups supporting details into appropriate paragraphs. Hardly any run-ons/fragmented sentences. Some variety in sentence length.	Outstanding Student uses paragraphs that are ordered appropriately and include main ideas and supporting facts/details. No fragmented or run-on sentences. Variety in length and type of sentences.
