Focus	Poor The writing is not focused. The writer may shift from idea to idea, making it difficult for the reader to follow or understand.	Fair The writing is somewhat focused. The writer includes and introduction and conclusion, but they need more information.	Good The paragraphs and writing are for the most part focused.	Excellent The paragraphs and the writing as a whole are focused.
Organization	Poor The writer does not have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Transitions are rarely used or not used at all.	Fair The writer may not always organize with a beginning middle and end. Uses very few transitions.	Good The writer for the most part organizes logically with a beginning, middle and end. Uses some transitions.	Excellent The writer organizes writing logically with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Regurlarly uses transitions.
Elaboration	Poor The writer's sentences are incomplete with deciptive details rarely used.	Fair The writer has used simple sentence structure. Using few descriptive words or details.	Good The writer has attempted to use variety in sentence structure. Word choice includes some adjectives, adverbs, verbs, nouns and figurative language. Some details given. Litltle dialogue used.	Excellent The writer uses variety in sentence structure. Word choice includes adjectives, adverbs, verbs, nouns and figurative language. Lots of details and dialogue where appropriate.
Voice	Poor No voice is used. The writer does not engage the reader.	Fair There are moments when voice is used. Some parts of the writing may sound like the writer.	Good The writer uses voice and engages the reader for most of the writing.	Excellent The writer uses voice and engages the reader throughout the entire writing.
