Knowledge of Traditional Rhythms	Poor Remembers a few of the rhythm patterns and tries, but appears lost and out of sync with others.	Fair Demonstrates some knowledge of rhythms, but unsure of some of the rhythm patterns. Sometimes hesitates/ watches others and makes some errors	Good Demonstrates good knowledge of rhythm patterns. Keeps up with group. Few errors.	Excellent Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the rhythm patterns. and do them well.
Technical skills	Poor Although remembers some of the hand techniques, little attention paid to hand placement and execution of music notes or other details of drumming.	Fair Only some understanding of technical elements (ie. hand placement, quality of music notes, body positions) demonstrated.	Good Drumming with attention to most details of technique, but hasn't attained proficiency in the drumming style yet.	Excellent Plays with great attention to quality of sounds, body position, hand placement and other details of drumming. Also demonstrates an excellent understanding of percussion techniques.
Classroom Participation	Poor The scholar is not very focused, concentrated or committed to learning African percussion.	Fair The scholar is generally focused, but arrives to class late and unprepared (i.e. no paper, no pencil). Has difficulty working as ensemble.	Good The scholar is focused; cooperative and puts forth effort towards improvement.	Excellent The scholar is focused and deeply concentrated in learning African percussion. Recognizes differences in rhythms and can accurately demonstrate in class; independently practices.
Rhythm/Tempo	Poor Attempts to keep a rhythm, but gets off beat and speeds up or falls behind often. Doesn't follow beat in music.	Fair Shows a basic understanding of tempo and beat, but falls behind and/or speeds up in places or makes errors in rhythm.	Good Generally accurate in beat, tempo, rhythms sequences most of the time.	Excellent Shows a complete understanding of tempo and beat and stays on rhythmn throughout the class.
