Softball: Throwing

Beginning

Student attempts to place the throwing-arm side of body away from the target, attempts to step toward the target, and attempts to raise the arm at elbow. Student does not use the 'bow and arrow' technique.
Developing

Student demonstrates proper body stance, raises arm at elbow, steps toward the target with the opposite foot, and attempts to use the 'bow and arrow' technique.
Proficient

Student demonstrates and applies proper body stance, bends and raises the arm at the elbow, steps toward the target with the opposite foot and is able to use the 'bow and arrow' technique most of the time.
Excellent

Student consistently demonstrates placing the throwing-arm side of the body away from the target, steps toward target with the opposite foot and is able to use the 'bow and arrow' technique effectively. This is demonstrated by being able to accurately throw at a target.
Softball: Catching/Fielding

Beginning

Student attempts to be in the ready position and attempts to follow the ball; however is not able to use the 'W' and 'V' techniques when catching or fielding.
Developing

Student demonstrates being able to move into the path of the ball, glove is ready, watches the ball, feet are spread and sometimes uses the 'W' and 'V' techniques when catching or fielding.
Proficient

Student demonstrates and applies ready position, watches ball, moves towards ball, feet are spread, and student is able to use the 'W' and 'V' techniques when catching or fielding most of the time.
Excellent

Student consistently demonstrates ready position, glove is in position, keeps their eye on the ball, and uses their free hand to secure the ball when it enters the glove. 'W' and 'V' techniques are used effectively when catching or fielding.
Softball: Batting

Beginning

Attempts to stand with the side of their body toward the pitcher, attempts to face the plate, and attempts to swing through the ball 40% of the time.
Developing

Student demonstrates proper body stance, dominate hand is on top, keeps bat off shoulder, keeps eye on ball, and swings through the ball 60% of the time.
Proficient

Student demonstrates and applies proper body stance, keeps hands together when gripping the bat, swings horizontally, attempts to hold the bat off of shoulder, keeps eye on ball, and swings through the ball 70% of the time.
Excellent

Student consistently demonstrates proper body stance, dominate hand is on top and hands together, weight is on back leg, keeps elbow away from body, eye is on ball, and swings level with the ground at the height of the pitch 80% of the time.
