	Secure 3 pts	Developing 2 pts	Beginning 1 pts
Purpose/Details	Secure Compares and contrasts items clearly. Points to specific examples to illustrate comparison. Includes only the information relevant to comparison.	Developing The essay compares and contrasts but the supporting information is general. The essay includes information that may not be relevant.	Beginning The essay slightly compares and/or contrasts but does not include details that support the comparison and/or contrast of the essay.
Transitions	Secure Moves smoothly from one idea to the next. Uses comparison/ contrast transition words to show relationships between ideas. Uses variety of structure & transitions.	Developing Essay moves from one idea to the next, but with little variety. Shows some use of transitions.	Beginning Transitions between ideas are unclear or nonexistent.
Conventions (GUMS)	Secure Grammar, Usage, Mechanics, Spelling are nearly perfect throughout the essay (0-1 errors)	Developing Some errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling throughout the essay(2-6 errors)	Beginning Many errors in GUMS throughout the essay. Editing should have been done (more than 6 errors)
