Novice High

Writers can express themselves within the context in which the language was learned, relying mainly on practiced material. Due to inadequate vocabulary and/or grammar, writing at this level may only partially communicate the intentions of the writer.
Novice Mid

Writers reproduce from memory a modest number of words and phrases in context.
I use lists of topic specific words or phrases.
I may revert to English when I do not know the word/phrase.

Technical Skills

Advanced Low

Writers are able to combine and link sentences into texts of paragraph length and structure.
Intermediate High

Narrations and descriptions are often, but not always, of paragraph length, but may be inconsistent in the use of appropriate time markers, resulting in a loss of clarity.
I use more than one sentence at a time. I often use compound sentences. I use transitional words between thoughts. I ask and answer questions.
Intermediate Mid

Writers show evidence of control of basic sentence structure and verb forms.
Writing is a collection of discrete sentences and/or questions loosely strung together.
At times I use more than one sentence. I use isolated compound sentence. I ask and answer questions.
Intermediate Low

There may be basic errors in grammar, word choice, punctuation, spelling, and in the formation and use of non-alphabetic symbols.
I use discrete simple sentences all the time. I use very few transitional words. I ask and answer simple questions about myself.
Novice High

I use a combination of sentences, phrases, and sentence fragments related to the topic and task.
(Level Up: Work on building our lists and fragments into sentences. Build memorized simple sentences into complex sentences by using transition words.)
Novice Mid

Little evidence of functional writing skills. Errors in spelling or in the representation of symbols may be frequent. (Level Up: Focus on forming complete sentences.)
Novice Low

Little to no evidence of functional writing skills. Errors in spelling or in the representation of symbols are frequent. (Level Up: Focus on understanding parts of speech)
Structures

Advanced Low

Writers demonstrate the ability to incorporate a limited number of cohesive devices, and may resort to some redundancy and awkward repetition. (Level Up: Focus on linking sentences, organization and adding details to paragraphs.)
Intermediate High

Writers can narrate and describe in different time frames when writing about everyday situations and events.
(Level Up: Keep the conversations going about yourself and your life by asking questions and describing or telling stories. Use your language to express your own thoughts. you speak in well-connected sentences.
Intermediate Mid

Writing is framed in present time buy may contain references to other time frames.
Little evidence of organization.
(Level Up: Continue to string sentences together aiming at paragraph level responses. Add more detail to your sentences or keep the conversation going.)
Intermediate Low

Most sentences are re-combinations of learned vocabulary and structures.
(Level Up: Work on stringing sentences together. Be sure to ask questions. Add more detail to your sentences using words such as because to lengthen simple sentences.)
Novice High

Writers re-combine learned vocabulary and structures to create simple sentences on very familiar topics.
I may combine memorized chunks of language with simple transition words.
Novice Mid

I use lists of topic specific words or phrases. I may use a sentence if it was taught as a chunk (eg. My name is....).
Novice Low

Beginning some very basic sentence structure.

Advanced Low

Writers rely on patterns of oral discourse and the writing style of their first language, demonstrating minimal control of common structures and vocabulary associated with the Advanced Level.

Vocabulary, grammar and style correspond to those of the spoken language.

Writing topics are tied to highly predictable content areas and personal information.
Novice High

Writing is focused on common elements of daily life.

Writers can meet limited basic practical writing needs using lists, short messages, postcards, and simple notes.

Writers can supply limited information on simple forms and documents, and other basic biographical information.
