Beginning to Develop
Very little effort made in drawing. The scene does not reflect the story at all. Picture is messy and sloppy. Picture appears unfinished and/or lacks detail. Very poor effort:
Unchallenging, boring, uninspired; Lack of risk or thought, rushed;

Approaching Expectations
Student put some effort in the drawing. It is a clear scene from the story, but it is not complete and/or it is messy/crumpled. Weak, needs improvement:
Too much empty space; needs more detail; Poor communication of ideas; Little care towards neatness or effort
Meeting Expectations
Students put a lot of effort in their drawing. The drawing clearly reflects a scene from the story and reflects detail and care in product. Good, but needs more:
Add more to the background; Add shading, color, shadow, texture; Add details/textures; Darken areas for contrast/shading
Exceeding Expectations
Students drew a very detailed scene from the story. The scene is creative and attractive. Evidence of imagination and effort clear. Well balanced composition:

The explanation
Beginning to Develop
Student does not clearly explain the drawing or does so briefly.
Approaching Expectations
Student explains the scene, but does not embellish or add descriptive, verbal details. Picture mostly explains the scene.
Meeting Expectations
Student accurately explains the scene.
Exceeding Expectations
Student thoroughly explains the scene.
