Purpose and Detail	Outstanding Selection of the event and specific details bring to light the writer's purpose in sharing this story in such a way that explanation is not needed. All of the details relate to the purpose.	Good to Fair The writer's purpose in sharing this story is clear, but some details either seem extraneous or have been omitted.	Poor Writer's purpose in choosing this event or in the selection of details appear to be random and not related to a clearly defined purpose.
Language Choice	Outstanding Significant integration of colorful descriptions, figurative language, and carefully chosen dialogue to bring the story to life.	Good to Fair The writer uses colorful descriptive words, figurative language, or dialogue, but not all three OR the word choices seem artificial or cliched.	Poor The writing remains somewhat flat through the absence of words or phrases that add color to the story. Dialogue is absent, is not realistic, or is too much of the story.
Active Voice	Outstanding The writer avoids all use of passive voice and omits all use of the verb "to be" by choosing strong and colorful verbs. Writer shows us the story rather than tells it.	Good to Fair The writer mostly avoids the use of passive voice and does not include any form of the verb "to be". The writer shows some aspects of the story, but merely tells us others.
