Text Features	Excellent The student identifies the symbol and what it represents; the two examples of exaggeration; and the example of labeling.	Good The student identifies two of the three text features.	Fair The student identifies one of the three text features.	Poor The student does not identify any of the three text features.
Inference	Excellent The student insightfully infers the meaning of the cartoon through an analysis of the text features.	Good The student somewhat infers the meaning of the cartoon through an analysis of the text features.	Fair The student describes the context and/or text features but does not infer what it all means.	Poor The student does not attempt to infer the meaning.
Grammar and Mechanics	Excellent The text is virtually free of errors in grammar and mechanics.	Good The text has fewer than three errors in grammar and mechanics.
