Fair Student attempts to begin, hook, lead in or write a topic sentence to show the audience what the piece is about.	Good Student has a clear beginning, hook, lead in or topic sentence. The audience knows exactly what the piece is about.	Excellent Student has a superb beginning, hook, lead in, or topic sentence. The student clearly and creatively explains what the piece will be about.
Focus	Poor Student has no focus. The writing does not stay on topic.	Fair Student attempts to stay focused throughout the piece.	Good Student has a clear focus and stays on topice. Student may even have several focus points all related to the topic.	Excellent Student shows superior ability to stay focused. Student clearly has a grasp of writing a good essay/paragraph.
Conclusion	Poor Student has no clear conclusion. The piece of writing just stops abruptly.	Fair Student attempts to conclude the piece. However, several parts of the story are left hanging.	Good Student has a clear conclusion which matches the topic sentence, topic, and/or the main idea.	Excellent Student has an above average conclusion. Student shows the ability to wrap up the story or piece of writing with a degree of high quality writing.
Creative/Thoughtful	Poor Student response to the piece are not creative, thoughtful or true to the characters from the story.	Fair Student attempts to be creative and thoughtful and are somewhat true to the characters.	Good Student clearly followed directions, is creative, thoughtful and true to the characters.	Excellent Student shows outstanding skill at being creative, thoughtful and true to the characters, as well as, mimicking the author's style of writing.
Conventions	Poor Student has an abundance of spelling and grammatical errors.	Fair Student has many spelling and grammatical errors.	Good Student has few spelling and grammatical errors.	Excellent Student has no spelling and/or grammatical errors.
