Special Occasion Speech Special Occasion Speech Students will deliver a speech based on a selected special occasion: graduation, retirement, wedding etc. Speech will be graded on organization, delivery and time. Introduction 10%	Excellent The speaker clearly establishes the occasion and purpose of the speech, grabs the audience's attention and makes the audience want to listen.	Good The speaker introduced the speech adequately, including an attention getter and established the occasion and purpose of the speech.	Fair The speaker introduced the topic, but did not clearly establish the occasion and/or purpose of the speech. Weak attention getter.	Needs Improvement The speaker failed to introduce the speech. Or, the introduction was not useful in indicating what the speech was about.
Organization 20 %	Excellent Logical, coherent organization helped convey the speaker's message clearly. It was easy to follow & to understand.	Good The speaker used a logical order to deliver the information, but may have minor lapses in organization.	Fair The speaker attempted to use an organizational pattern, but it was not always effective. Speaker rambled at times and/or did not stay on topic.	Needs Improvement The speech was difficult to follow due to a lack of organization and rambling.
Conclusion 10%	Excellent The speaker drew the speech to a close with an effective memorable statement.	Good The speaker adequately concluded the speech and ended the speech with a closing statement.	Fair The speaker concluded the speech in a disorganized fashion and/or did not have a closing statement.	Needs Improvement The speaker ended the speech abruptly without an effective conclusion.
Vocal Quality: Rate, Pitch & Volume 15%	Excellent The speaker's voice was loud enough to hear. The speaker varied rate, pitch & volume to enhance the speech. Appropriate pausing was employed and there was no verbal clutter	Good The speaker spoke loudly and clearly enough to be understood. The speaker varied rate, pitch OR volume to enhance the speech. Pauses were attempted. Some verbal clutter.	Fair The speaker could be heard most of the time. The speaker attempted to use some variety in vocal quality, but not always successful. A lot of verbal clutter.	Needs Improvement Audience had difficulty hearing and/or understanding much of the speech due to low volume. Little variety in rate, pitch or volume. Verbal clutter is distracting.
Eye Contact 15%	Excellent Eye contact was used during the entire speech with the entire class.	Good Eye contact was used most of the time with the majority of the class.	Fair The speaker struggled to make eye contact with the majority of the class during most of the speech.	Needs Improvement The speaker seldom or never looked at the audience.
Body Language 10%	Excellent The speaker maintained good posture. Movements & gestures were purposeful and enhanced the delivery of the speech and did not distract.	Good The speaker maintained adequate posture and non-distracting movement during the speech. Some gestures were used.	Fair The speaker did not use gestures or some gestures & movements were distracting.	Needs Improvement The speaker's posture and expression indicated a lack of enthusiasm with the speech. Movements were very distracting.
Occasion Preparation 15%	Excellent The speaker appeared well-prepared, confident and comfortable and maintained the appropriate tone and attitude for the occasion.	Good The speaker seemed fairly comfortable and confident and some-what prepared. Maintained appropriate tone and attitude for occasion.	Fair The speaker had some confidence, but nervousness was evident. Lapses in the appropriate tone & attitude for the occasion.	Needs Improvement The speaker did not seem prepared and/or lacked any confidence. The tone & attitude were not appropriate for the occasion.
Adherence to Time Limit 5%	Excellent minimum 4 minutes	Good slightly less than 4 minutes	Fair Between 3 and 3 1/2 minutes.	Needs Improvement Less than 3 minutes.
