Drawing and Design of the Cups
<2.8
Cup was not well observed nor carefully drawn. Did not include the shadow - or make use of the shadow in the design. Drawing did not make good use of the space.
3.2
Cup was adequately observed and drawn and included a believable shadow. Design made good use of the space
3.5
Cup was well observed and carefully drawn - including believable shading and a shadow falling on the table. Design of the cup and shadow made good use of the space, filling it and creating interesting negative spaces.
3.8-4.0
Cup was exceptionally well drawn - including accurate elipses for both the top edge and bottom. Shading and the shadow were believably rendered. Design of the cup and shadow not only made great use of the space - but used it creatively
Used Complimentary Color
<2.8
Did not demonstrate understanding of the concept of compliments, warm and cool colors and used compliments in fewer than four of the cups
3.2
Demonstrated adequate understanding of the complimentary and warm/cool colors. Used simple compliments for all four cups.
3.5
Demonstrated good understanding of the complimentary and warm/cool colors. Mixed complex compliments using warmer colors for the cup and cooler colors for the shadows.
3.8-4.0
Demonstrated nuanced understanding of the compliments and warm and cool colors. Mixed complex warm colors for the cups and cooler colors for the shadows - and was able to communicate that at least one (or more) of the cups was actually white - with color.
Used Four Distinct Painting Styles
<2.8
Did not use four distinctly different painting styles for each cup.
3.2
Used four distinct painting styles - including pointalism (optical color mixing), impressionist style, thickly painted style, and simple blending style. All four were competently painted in each style.
3.5
Used four distinct painting styles - including pointalism (optical color mixing), impressionist style, thickly painted style, and simple blending style - with a high degree of technical success.
3.8-4.0
Used all four styles of painting with great technical success - each cup was distinctly different from the other and made great use of the advantages of each style.
Neat, Professional Presentation
<2.8
Painting was sloppy - there were few distinct, crisp edges and the colors were not cleanly painted.
3.2
Painting was neat. Edges were relatively crisp - for the two smooth styles - and background, shadow and object were all distinct and differentiated.
3.5
Painting was very neat - with no unintentional marks left unfixed. The object, shadow and background were all easily distinguished from one-another and the two smooth styles had very crisp edges.
3.8-4.0
Painting was very neat - with no mistakes. The object, shadow and background were distinct in character from one-another and the two smooth styles had very crisp, clean edges.
Creative Expression
<2.8
Painting demonstrated little creative initiative or interest. The cups, shadows and background were painted in an obligatory fashion.
3.2
Painting demonstrated some creative expression - in design, use of color, use of painting style, or creative use of background - in one or more of the four paintings.
3.5
Painting demonstrated great creative expression - in design, use of color, use of painting style, or creative use of background in at least two of the four sections.
3.8-4.0
Painting demonstrated great creative expression - in design, use of color, use of painting style, or creative use of background in at least three of the four sections.
