Knowledge of choreography

Expert

Demonstrates excellent knowledge of the choreography. Focus remains out to the audience rather than looking to fellow dancers for cues.
Practitioner

Demonstrates good knowledge of choreography. Executes all movement but possibly with slight hesitation or needing cues from fellow dancers.
Developing

Executes some of the choreography, but unsure of many movements. Often times hesitates/ watches others and makes some errors.
Novice

Remembers only a few of the steps/ movements and tries, but looks lost and out of sync with others.
Technical skills

Expert

Dance performed with great attention to quality of movement, body position, technical execution, and other details of dance. Also demonstrates an excellent understanding of dance style.
Practitioner

Dance performed with attention to most details of technique, but hasn't attained proficiency in dance style yet. Alignment may be slightly off, or leg/arm positions may be slightly inaccurate.
Developing

Only some understanding of technical elements (such as footwork, quality of movements, body positions) demonstrated in performance. Dancers' positions do not match the others for much of the dance.
Novice

Although dancer remembers some of the dance, little attention is paid to the quality of the movement or other details of the dance.
Performance Energy

Expert

The dancer creates a believable character on stage and is able to engage the audience completely through their performance. Energy is captivating. Focus is always to partners or audience, never to the floor.
Practitioner

The dancer communicates with other dancers and audience through eye contact and facial and body expression. Energy is high, but not consistently throughout the performance.
Developing

The dancer is generally focused, but only some attempt made to communicate with others on stage or audience. Dancer lacks the full amount of physical and emotional energy through much of the dance.
Novice

The dancer is not very focused, concentrated, or committed to performance. Dancer does not exhibit any kind of physical or emotional energy throughout the performance.
Spacing

Expert

Dancer accurately maintains spacing throughout entirety of piece
Practitioner

Dancer is aware of spacing but is not able to maintain it with ease-makes adjustments that are noticeable to the audience.
Developing

Dancer struggles to stay on their mark through much of the dance.
Novice

Dancer is unaware of their mark through much of the dance, and their incorrect placement affects other dancers.
Musicality

Expert

Dancer consistently stays on the music, executing movement on the correct counts through all of the dance and remaining in unison with ensemble when needed.
Practitioner

Dancer is on the music for most of the dance, but may be late/early for a few moments in the dance, but DOES NOT stick out much.
Developing

Dancer is early/late often, pulling focus with their mistake. Dancer tries to stay in unison with the rest of the dancers and succeeds somewhat.
Novice

Dancer is not able to stay in unison with the ensemble. Dancer cannot count the phrase to execute it on the correct counts. Dancer is always late with the music.
