Thesis or main idea
Not Sufficiently in line with Expec
Several topics are emerging, any one of which could be the central idea.
Approaching Expectations
The topic is there, but it is still too broad or unfocused. The reader has to infer the real topic and the direction of ideas that the writer intends
Meets Expectations
The topic is quite broad, but the author has a sense of direction.
Exceeds Expectations
Topic is narrow, manageable, and focused
Paragraphing
Not Sufficiently in line with Expec
Piece is visually written in paragraph form, but generally there are not clear topic sentences that unite the rest of the sentences around one central idea.
Approaching Expectations
Paragraphs mostly have a topic sentence, but too frequently there is extraneous information or a paragraph changes topic mid-stream.
Meets Expectations
Each paragraph has a topic sentence and rarely is there information that appears to not fit into that paragraph.
Exceeds Expectations
Each paragraph has a very clear topic sentence and all the following ideas directly relate to this sentence in a smooth, logical manner.
Organizational Words
Not Sufficiently in line with Expec
Rarely if at all are organizational words used, often leaving the relationship of ideas confusing or, at best, up to the reader's discernment.
Approaching Expectations
Only occasionally are organization words or phrases used. Too often the reader has to infer the connections between ideas in the paragraph.
Meets Expectations
Organizational words and phrases are used, but the flow of the piece and the build-up or the point being made would be enhanced by more effective use of such organizational tools.
Exceeds Expectations
Within the paragraph, organizational words and phrases contribute significantly to the over-all flow of the ideas and support the reader in understanding connections.
Transitions between Paragaphs
Not Sufficiently in line with Expec
Some attempt is made to organize ideas into ordered paragraphs, but these paragraphs do not build smoothly on each other and appear to need more pre-writing strategizing.
Approaching Expectations
The paragraphs are in a logical order, but there are not transitions to support the flow of the piece and to help the reader understand connections.
Meets Expectations
Most paragraphs have adequate transitions.
Exceeds Expectations
Transitions exist between each paragraph and are smooth, enhancing the flow of the writing and helping the reader grasp connections.
Introduction
Not Sufficiently in line with Expec
The introduction jumps too quickly into the main body of the writing and fails to sufficiently engage the reader and give him/her a sense of direction.
Approaching Expectations
This piece of writing has an introduction, but it is predictable and does little to entice the reader to engage in the reading process.
Meets Expectations
The introduction is appropriate for the piece of writing and does a good job of preparing the reader for the rest of the piece.
Exceeds Expectations
The introduction not only is original and appropriate for the piece of writing, but it serves to significantly engage the reader in the piece and helps to set a strong foundation for the rest of the essay or story.
Conclusion
Not Sufficiently in line with Expec
There appears to be an attempt at a conclusion, but is is abrupt and does not bring anything fresh to the piece.
Approaching Expectations
There is a conclusion, but it needs to be developed more in order to augment the piece.
Meets Expectations
There is a clear conclusion that pulls together the piece.
Exceeds Expectations
The conclusion wraps up the ideas of the piece in a clear and original manner that solidifies the points made earlier and leaves the reader feeling both satisfied and thoughtful.
