Ideas and Content The heart of the message	Excellent My topic was clearly stated. I had 3 details about why I would be a good candidate, and 3 changes I would make at our school.	Good The reader can understand the main idea of my paper. I had 4-5 details about why I would be a good candidate and changes I would make at our school.	Fair I have a main topic in my paper, but some of my details are not about my topic. I have a few details about why I would be a good candidate and changes I would make.	Needs Improvement It is hard to identify the main topic. I only have one or two details. *My details do not stay on topic.
Organization Internal structure of the piece.	Excellent My paper is organized so topics and subjects are highlighted in a way that makes the paper interesting.	Good My paper is organized in a way that makes it easy to read.	Fair My paper has thoughts not organized into a paragraph.	Needs Improvement My paper lacks a clear sense of direction with ideas just being strung together.
Conventions Spelling, Punctuation, Grammar & Usage, Capitalization, and Indentation	Excellent My words are spelled correctly and used appropriately. My grammar is correct. I used capitalization and punctuation correctly. I indented at the beginning of each paragraph.	Good I can use conventions which enhance readability, but there are a few errors that distract and impair readability.	Fair I have some errors that interfere with the meaning of the writing.	Needs Improvement My errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar & usage, make my paper difficult to read.
Presentation Handwriting and Appearance	Excellent I took my time and used my best handwriting, making sure my final copy was neat.	Good My handwriting was neat, but I have a few eraser marks that distract from the overall presentation.	Fair My handwriting was rushed, not clear and neat. I may have some eraser marks making my final copy somewhat careless.	Needs Improvement I did not use my best handwriting, or there are many eraser smudges.
