The writer writes with a clear purpose and focuses on on event. The writer knows the audience and his a clear understanding of who they are as readers.

The purpose of the narrative is very clear from the beginning of the narrative. The writer uses several explicit details to help the reader become a part of the narrative. The writer uses language that is targeted toward the audience.
Meets Standards

The purpose of the narrative is hard to understand, but the writer's ideas are evident. The writer uses some details to help the audience become apart of the narrative.
Below Standard

The purpose of the narrative is not clear. The writer's thoughts are not focused on one event and the language is not appropriate for the audience. The narrative does not establish a clear understanding of the situation.
Organization

The three commonly used forms of organization for personal narratives are chronological, flashback, and reflective. Transition words are used to help the writer's events and thoughts transition throughout the narrative.

Exceeds Standards

The narrative is well-organized. The events of the story follow one or more of the three organizational methods. Transitional phrases and/or words help the reader transition from thoughts and events very smoothly.
Meets Standards

The narrative is organized, but lacks appropriate use of transitions. The organizational method of the narrative is somewhat clear throughout the narrative.
Below Standard

The narrative lacks organization. Events of the narrative do not reflect one of the three organizational methods. Few transitional words or phrases are used.
Word Choice

Concrete nouns and strong verbs should be used throughout the narrative. Sensory details-sight, smell, taste, sound, and touch- words should be used to help the reader create a mental picture of the narrative.

The writer uses some concrete nouns and strong verbs in the narrative. Sensory details are used, but do not help the reader clearly make a mental picture of the narrative. These elements are repeated throughout the narrative.
Below Standard

The writer does not use concrete nouns and strong verbs. The narrative lacks sensory details. The reader can not create a clear mental picture of the narrative. These elements are infrequenly repeated throughout the narrative.
PowerPoint

Slides follow same sequence of events as the narrative, pictures are relevant to the narrative and do not detract

Exceeds Standards

Slides followed in sequence of events, pictures helped enhance the story and didn't detract from the speaker's speech.
Meets Standards

Slides were mostly in order of events, and only a few picture detracted from the speaker.
Below Standard

Slides were not in order and pictures were inappropriate to the speech.
Conventions

Punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and grammar rules should be followed throughout the narrative. Dialogue is punctuated correctly using quotation marks, commas, and end marks in both the written work and the PowerPoint.

The narrative contains less the two (2) errors in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, and Dialogue is correctly punctuated using quotation marks, commas, and end marks.
Meets Standards

The narrative contains less the five (3) errors in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, and Dialogue is correctly punctuated using quotation marks, commas, and end marks.
Below Standard

The narrative contains less the five (4) errors in punctuation, capitalization, spelling, grammar, and Dialogue is correctly punctuated using quotation marks, commas, and end marks.
Timing and Practice

Practicing timing with power point and speech

Exceeds Standards

Student have practiced and the PowerPoint and speech fit together and there is little hang time at the end of the speech.
Meets Standards

Students seemed to have practice a little and there are a few places where speech and PowerPoint don't match up
Below Standard

Students have no practice with PowerPoint, nothing matches up together and a large time is left hanging on the end of the speech.
