	Excellent 7 pts	Good 6 pts	Average 5 pts	Below Average 4 pts
Introduction/Thesis Statement	Excellent Well developed introduction and thesis statement. They engage the reader and cover both subjects and the author's purpose.	Good Introduction and thesis statement create interest and are fairly well developed. They cover both subjects but not engaging.	Average Introduction and thesis statement introduce the subjects for comparison or contrast, but don't give accurate and complete information	Below Average Introduction and thesis statement do not introduce both subjects for comparison or contrast.
Support--Similarities	Excellent Provides well-developed support for each similarity. The information is accurate, important, and insightful. Has at least three solid similarities.	Good Provides good support for each similarity. Most information is accurate, important, and insightful. Has at least two solid similarities.	Average Provides some support for each similarity. Some information is slightly inaccurate or not very insightful or important. Has at least one solid similarity.	Below Average Provides little if any support for each similarity.
Support--Differences	Excellent Provides well-developed support for each difference. The information is accurate, important and insightful. Has at least three solid differences.	Good Provides good support for each difference. Most information is accurate, insightful and important. Has at least two solid differences.	Average Provides some support for each difference. Some information is slightly inaccurate or unimportant. Has at least one solid difference.	Below Average Provides little if any support for each difference.
Conclusion	Excellent The concluding paragraph unifies the essay. It paraphrases the thesis statement and is engaging.	Good The concluding paragraph unifies the essay, but it is not very engaging or interesting.	Average The concluding paragraph makes a point about the subjects for comparison or contrast, but it does not unify or "wrap-up" the essay effectively.	Below Average There is no conclusion evident in the essay, or the conclusion is not related to the essay.
Organization	Excellent The information is organized into an introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Transitions are used correctly and connect the ideas. Paragraphs are indented and the paper is double spaced.	Good The information is organized into an introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. More or better transitions are needed. Most paragraphs are indented and the paper is double spaced.	Average The information is not well organized. The introduction, 2 body paragraphs, and conclusion are not all there or poorly developed. Transitions are confusing or are used sparingly. Paragraphs are indented OR the paper is double spaced.	Below Average The writing is not organized. Introduction and conclusion may both be missing. O-2 transitions are used. Paragraphs are not indented and the paper is not double spaced.
Sentence Fluency	Excellent Clear, concise sentences make the text flow smoothly. Sentence beginnings, lengths, and patterns are varied for effect. The paper is effortlessly read aloud with inflection.	Good One or two sections of the writing do not flow smoothly. In these sections, several sentences may have the same beginnings, lengths, or patterns. the paper can be read with inflection.	Average In many places, the writing does not flow smoothly due to repetitive sentence beginnings, lengths, and patterns. It is difficult to read the paper with inflection.	Below Average Many sentences are incomplete or incorrect. It is very difficult to read aloud.
GUMS	Excellent Contains no errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling.	Good Contains 1-4 errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling.	Average Contains 5-10 errors in grammar, usage, mechanics, and spelling.	Below Average Contains more than 10 errors in grammar, ussage, mechanics, and spelling.
