Student does not contribute to class discussions, choosing not to answer questions, ask questions, engage with fellow students. This is a repeated pattern rather than a one-time event.
Fair

Student occasionally contributes to class discussions by answering questions when called on but fails to make any clear effort of his/her own to ask questions, engage with fellow students, etc.
Good

Student makes satisfactory contributions to class discussions. Student will answer questions when called on and from time to time makes voluntary contributions to discussions by asking questions, contributing ideas, etc.
Very Good

Student makes frequent contributions to class discussions. Although similar in quantity to "outstanding" work, the students contributions lack the depth and insight of truly outstanding work.
Outstanding

Student consistently enhances the learning environment for all students by exhibiting the following behaviors: outstanding contributions to class discussions, asking relevant questions, responding to other students' ideas in constructive ways, etc.
Group work

Student fails to make any meaningful contribution to group work and may hinder others from completing tasks.
Fair

Student makes minimal contributions to the group, frequently sitting without voicing ideas, asking questions, etc.
Good

Student makes a satisfactory contribution to group work by voicing his/her ideas, listening to others, etc. Contributions may be uneven - very good on some days but not others. Quality of ideas will sometimes but not always challenge the way others in the group think about a particular idea or problem.
Very Good

Student is a strong participant in the group, often contributing insights, responding to others, etc. Quantity of contributions will be similar to "outstanding" work but contributions may lack the depth and insight of truly outstanding work.
Outstanding

Student is a clear leader in the group, contributing meaningful insights, listening carefully and responding to others' points of view, and working diligently to keep the group on task. This student helps others in the group to learn through his/her contributions.

Student shows behaviors that indicate a lack of engagement in class - sleeping in class, frequently coming to class late, working on materials for other classes, etc.
Good

Student demonstrates generally appropriate behaviors for college-level classes; student is usually attentive and usually shows active engagement with class sessions.
Very Good

Student demonstrates engagement nearly all the time; this student may have occasional days when he/she is less engaged with class, but generally he/she demonstrates appropriate, professional behavior.
Outstanding

Student goes out of his/her way to demonstrate engagement with class sessions. Student never sleeps, never works on other work, etc. Moreover, student clearly listens attentively to all other participants in the class. Above all, this student is a model of professional behavior.
Preparedness

Poor

Student is almost always unprepared for class; it is clear that the student rarely makes the effort to read materials, much less think them through prior to class.
Fair

Student is often unprepared for class. If student has read materials, he/she has not engaged with them in any meaningful way, and student is sometimes unable even to summarize readings. Rarely does this student annotate texts, take notes on readings, etc.
Good

Student is generally prepared for class, usually reading all materials before class. Student will be able to demonstrate some level of understanding of material through summary but may not have thoroughly engaged with the material. Student will be able to show some level of engagement with material through annotations of texts, notes, etc..
Very Good

Students is frequently well-prepared, having read and carefully thought through the material before coming to class. There may be occasional days when students' preparedness is less than idea. Usually, this student has done significant work annotating texts, taking notes, etc.
Outstanding

Student is clearly prepared, having read all materials. More important, student has thought through materials and comes to class prepared to ask questions, contribute ideas, etc. Student can demonstrate this preparedness with well-annotated texts, written notes, etc.
