	Mastery exceeds the minimum department standards 15 pts	Proficiency meets the minimum department standards 12 pts	Approaches meets basic department standards 10 pts	Fails does not meet the minimum department standards 7 pts
Thesis	Mastery Has a clear, well-developed thesis that evaluates the topic and answers the prompt	Proficiency Has a thesis that evaluates the topics and addresses the prompt	Approaches Has a limited, confused, poorly developed, or only partially developed thesis	Fails Has no thesis, simply restates the prompt, or does not address the topic
Structure	Mastery Has a “road map” that supports the thesis and both guides and structures the essay	Proficiency Has a “road map” that guides the essay	Approaches Has a limited “road map” or a “road map” that does not guide the essay	Fails Has no “road map” or “road map” is unrelated to thesis or to essay
Page Numbers	Mastery Has written a 3 page paper as instructed in the directions	Proficiency Has written a 2 page paper	Approaches Has written a 1 page paper	Fails Did not write a paper
