Exceeding Expectations

Student is prepared, engages with audience, speaks clearly, varying volume, tone and rhythm according to poem's content. Uses expressive movements, facial expressions, and gestures that enhance the ideas and mood of the poem.

Student has poem prepared, but there is little evidence of rehearsal. Poem is not memorized but reads fluidly when notecards are consulted.

Student has not rehearsed & poem is neither memorized or on notecards. Does not appropriately engage with audience, use gestures, expressive tones, or volume. Student interrupts themselves or laughs while on stage.
Creativity

Exceeding Expectations

Student demonstrates creativity and out-of-the-box thinking when crafting poems for performance. Uses classroom resources or lessons to enrich their creations.
Meeting Expectations

Student demonstrates a degree of creativity in either writing or performing and is able to take a different direction some of the time in developing new ideas.
Working Towards Expectations

Student shows a slight amount of creativity when it comes to writing or performing, and is more reliant on peers to generate ideas.
Audience Member

Exceeding Expectations

Student is attentive, respectful & encouraging during performances. Peers can look to this student as an example for expected behavior.
Meeting Expectations

Student is not blatantly disruptive, but is not an attentive audience member, ie. rehearsing his or her own poem during other performances, presenting inattentive body language, or conversing with classmates.
Working Towards Expectations

Student is disruptive and/or disengaged during performances. Student may heckle or interrupt performances with social or physical behaviors.
