This is a middle school persuasive essay rubric. This essays requires cited facts, four body paragraphs, and a thesis statement.

Introduction Paragraph

Poor 1

The student used a thesis statement that is unclear or does not include 4 complete reasons.
Fair 2-3

The student attempted a thesis statement, but there were mistakes in writing it. The student did not follow directions when writing the introduction paragraph or have a broad to narrow structure.
Good 4

The student had a complete introduction ending with a well-constructed thesis stating four main reasons.
Conclusion Paragraph

Poor 1

The student did not use the main idea to bring their paper to a close. There was no thesis statement at the beginning of the conclusion.
Fair 2-3

The student used the main idea to end the paper and restated the thesis, but did not restate the ideas clearly.
Good 4

The student restated the thesis, showed good narrow to broad organization, and had a creative and original ending.
Grammar and Spelling & Word Choice

Poor 1

More than 5 spelling, capitalization, punctuation, or grammatical errors.
Ideas are never expressed using strong or precise language.
Fair 2-3

Three to five spelling, capitalization, punctuation, or grammatical errors.
Ideas are sometimes expressed using strong and precise language.

Zero to two spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammatical errors.
Ideas are always expressed using strong and precise language.
Formal Language

More than 5 formal language errors.
Fair 2-3

3-5 formal language errors.
Good 4

0-2 formal language errors.
MLA format

There are no in text citations or work cited page
Fair 2-3

The citations are incorrectly formatted.
Good 4

MLA format is applied in a works cited, as well as all facts are sourced correctly in the essay.
