Independent Reading Rubric
This rubric will be used by students (and teachers) to evaluate their independent reading time.

The student reads the entire assigned time and completes assignment given. Reads and finishes more than one book per month. Always brings their book/materials to class.

The student reads almost all of the assigned reading, and usually completes assignment given. Reads and finishes one book per month. Almost always brings their book/materials to class.
Developing
The student reads some of the time, and sometimes completes assignments given. Reads most of a novel in a month, tries others. Often forgets their materials/book for class.
Basic
The students wastes a lot of reading time, and rarely completes assignment given. Tries some books but does not finish a novel. Rarely brings book/materials to class.
Chooses Appropriate Books
Excellent
Student chooses a book which they have not read before, which is at or above grade level, and reads a variety of genres.
Proficient
Student chooses a book which they have never read before which is close to their reading level from various genres.
Developing
Student chooses a book which they have never read before that is below their reading level from mostly the same genre.
Basic
Student chooses a book which they have never read before and is significantly below the students reading level from the same genre/series.
Reading Strategies
Excellent
Student accurately describes what has happened in the story using many examples. Uses many strategies while reading.
Proficient
Student accurately describes what has happened in the story using some details. Uses some strategies while reading.
Developing
Student accurately describes most of what happened in the story. Uses a few strategies while reading.
Basic
Student has difficulty re-telling the story. Rarely uses strategies while reading.
Tries to Understand
Excellent
Student stops reading when it doesn't make sense and reads parts again. Looks up words that they don't know. Thoughtfully completes one vocab builder per month.
Proficient
Student stops reading when it doesn't make sense and tries to use strategies to get through tricky spots or to figure out new words. Completes one vocab builder per month.
Developing
Student stops reading when it doesn't make sense and asks for assistance. Completes most of a vocab builder in a month.
Basic
Student gives up entirely OR plows on without trying to understand the story. Completes 50% or less of the vocab builder.
Understands Story Elements
Excellent
Student knows the name and descriptions of the important characters and can tell the setting and major events that happened. Completes one literacy activity a week. Class activities are thoughtfully completed with specific and engaging details.
Proficient
Student knows the name and descriptions of the important characters, the setting, and some of the major events that happened. Completes one literacy activity a week.Class activities are completed accurately with some detail.
Developing
Student knows the names OR descriptions of the important characters in the story, the basic setting, and a few minor events that happened. Completes most activities. Class activities are usually completed, but are lacking in detail or completion.
Basic
Student has trouble naming and describing the characters in the story, setting, and has minimal knowledge of events that happened. Completes 50% or less of required activities. Class activities are very vague and do not go in depth to demonstrate understanding.
