Poor
Student's journal entries are brief. Responses are under-developed and/or incomplete. Student's entries do not reflect an identification with characters and do not connect to student's own experience. Language, spelling, and grammar are poor.
Fair
Student's journal entries are adequately developed. Responses demonstrate satisfactory level of reflection and character identification. Student makes some person connections with the text by referencing some of their own experiences. Language, spelling, and grammar are satisfactory.
Good
Student's journal entries are well-developed. Responses are thorough and complete. Student's entries reflect a high level of personal engagement and thoughtful consideration of the character's situations. Student often makes personal connections to the text; referencing pertinent and personally meaningful life experience. Language is creative and descriptive, spelling and grammar are accurate and demonstrate an above average understanding.
Reading and Comprehension
Poor
Student completes only some of the readings. Student demonstrates a poor knowledge and understanding of the stories. Student is rarely able to support opinions and statements with examples from text.
Fair
Student completes most of the required readings. Student demonstrates some knowledge and understanding of the text, but often does not support opinions and statements with meaningful examples from the readings.
Good
Student completes each of the required readings. Student demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of the text by referencing poignant and pertinent examples from the stories in homework, class discussions, and role-play activities.
Class Participation
Poor
Student contributes little to class discussion. Student is disruptive and/or does not listen to teacher or student comments.
Fair
Student occasionally contributes to class discussion. At times student interupts speaker and/or fails to stay involved in discussion/activity.
Good
Student is frequently involved in class discussion and personally engaged with the discussion topics. Student uses examples from their own experience to contribute to class discussion. Student listens when others are talking and constructively responds to other people's comments.
Script and Role-Play Activity
Poor
Student demonstrates very little involvement with group activity. Student contributes little to the writing of script. Student plays a passive role in role-play activity, does not actively participate or is uncooperative.
Fair
Student demonstrates an adequate level of involvement in group. Student offers some suggestions to the writing of script, but relies on other group members to do the majority of the work. Student participates in role-play activity in a perfunctory way.
Good
Student demonstrates an active level of involvement in group. Student is actively involved in the writing of the script, and works with group members to create and build on ideas. Student is active and engaged in role-play, and personally invests themselves into the activity by incorporating their personal thoughts, experiences, and reactions.
