Playing Position
Unsatisfactory
Instrument is not held in the proper playing position. Right and/or left hand position is incorrect. Does not attempt, nor make efforts to improve proper posture.
Needs Improvement
Some effort is being made to hold the instrument correctly but performance is hindered by poor hand and finger placement. Sits with with shoulders down and forward, arms resting on body, feet crossed, and back bent. Sits with back against the chair.
Satisfactory
Hand and finger position are good but the instrument is not in the correct position to project to the audience. Sometimes is sitting with back bent, against chair or arms close to body.
Good
Playing position is good but there are minor errors in hand or finger position. Usually is standing while sitting.
Clear Excellence
Playing position is correct and hand & finger position are correct to allow for good technical facility. Standing while sitting!
Articulation
Unsatisfactory
No real attempt at articulation is being made.
Needs Improvement
Difficulty with tonguing slurring patterns, staccato markings, legato markings, and/or accents.
Satisfactory
Student usually follows the articulation marked but there are frequent or repeated small errors with tonguing slurring patterns, staccato markings, legato markings, and/or accents.
Good
Almost all articulation patterns are correct with only an occasional small error with tonguing slurring patterns, staccato markings, legato markings, and/or accents.
Clear Excellence
All articulation patterns are performed correctly.
Pitch Accuracy
Unsatisfactory
No recognizable tune is present.
Needs Improvement
Many notes are incorrect - student seems unfamiliar with the tune.
Satisfactory

Good
Mostly correct with a few errors. There may be small intonation problems.
Clear Excellence
Pitches are correct and intonation has a characteristic quality sound in all registers.
Tone Quality
Unsatisfactory
Sound is totally lacking in quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure/grip (focrum) and/or no breath support. Poor posture may be evident.
Needs Improvement
Limited projection - tone is poor or range is limited due to the need for a stronger embouchure or better focrum/breath support. Posture may need improvement.
Satisfactory
Fair use of projection and fullness of tone. There may be room for improvement in:
1. posture
2. embouchure or focrum
3. breath support
Good
Considerable use of projection and fullness of tone but still somewhat short of a mature sound.
Clear Excellence
Tone is full and well projected. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.
