Conventions	Poor Rarely capitalizes the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun I.	Fair Inconsistently capitalizes the beginning of sentences, names, and the pronoun I.	Good Always capitalizes the beginning of sentences, peoples' names, and the pronoun I.
Conventions	Poor Rarely uses correct punctuation at the end of sentences.	Fair Inconsistently uses the correct punctuation marks at the end of sentences.	Good Always uses punctuation marks at the end of each sentence.
Genre	Poor Writing structure and organization are not apparent.	Fair Writing has an inadequately developed structure; listing of facts with minimal descripitions of animal.	Good Writing has a well developed structure and organization is apparent; sentences adequately describe animal.
Writing Traits	Poor Minimal content on animal is included, and/or off topic.	Fair Content's main idea understandable. Little or no detail about favorite animal.	Good Content's main idea understandable with good details on their favorite animal.
Penmanship	Poor Improper letter formation and/or spacing between words; overall appearance is sloppy.	Fair Adequate amount of effort in forming letters properly, as well as spacing between words; overall appearance is satisfactory.
