Spelling and Grammar	Poor The final draft has more than 5 spelling and punctuation errors.	Fair There are 3-5 spelling and punctuation errors in the final draft.	Good There are 1-3 spelling or punctuation errors in the final draft.	Excellent There are no spelling or punctuation errors in the final draft.
Writing Process Pre-writing/Drafting Editing/Revising/Publishing	Poor Student devotes little time and effort to the writing process. Doesn't seem to care.	Fair Student devotes some time and effort to the writing process but was not very thorough. Does enough to get by.	Good Student devotes sufficient time and effort to the writing process (prewriting, drafting, reviewing, and editing). Works and gets the job done.	Excellent Student devotes a lot of time and effort to the writing process (prewriting, drafting, reviewing, and editing). Works hard to make the story wonderful.
Organization	Poor Ideas and scenes seem to be randomly arranged.	Fair The story is a little hard to follow. The transitions are sometimes not clear.	Good The story is pretty well organized. One idea or scene may seem out of place. Clear transitions are used.	Excellent The story is very well organized. One idea or scene follows another in a logical sequence with clear transitions.
Publishing Requirements -story meets all creative writing criteria -1.5 pages minimum - double spaced - size 11 - Title -Author	Poor More than two of the required elements are missing or incorrect.	Fair The story is missing two of the required elements.	Good The student has missed one of the required elements, either length, spacing or font size	Excellent The story is the required length or longer. Correct font size and spacing are present. The student has given a title and provided their name.
Use of language Adjectives, strong verbs, figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification, etc)	Poor Little variety seen in the verbs that are used. The story seems a little boring.	Fair A variety of verbs (passive voice) are used and describe the action accurately but not in a very exciting.	Good Several action verbs are used to describe what is happening in the story, but the word choice doesn't make the story as exciting as it could be.	Excellent Several action verbs (active voice) are used to describe what is happening in the story. The story seems exciting!
