Fair Correctly identifies a key literary element used in the novel, but does not explain what this element is. OR Correctly identifies and explains a literary technique used in the novel, but the technique is not important to the novel.	Poor Fails to correctly identify any literary element used in the novel.
How It Is Used	Excellent Gives 3 or more examples from the text and clearly explains how these demonstrate the identified literary element.	Good Gives 2 examples from the text and clearly explains how these demonstrate the identified literary element.	Fair Gives only 1 example from the text and clearly explains how it demonstrates the identified literary element. OR Gives 2 or more examples from the text but does not clearly explain how these demonstrate the identified literary element.	Poor Gives no examples from the text. OR Gives only 1 example from the text but does not clearly explain how it demonstrates the identified literary element.
Importance	Excellent Clearly explains why the identified literary element is important to the novel and speculates how the novel might be different if the technique had not been used.
