	Beginner 2 pts	Developing 3 pts	Proficient 4 pts	Exemplary 5 pts
Application of Skills serve, smash, clear, drop and net kill shots	Beginner Attempts skills but technique is not yet sufficient, resulting in consistently ineffective performance. Rarely demonstrates the form of forehand and backhand strokes with a long-handled implement with power and accuracy.	Developing Performs skills showing some elements of correct technique, but application is ineffective and inconsistent. Sometimes demonstrates the form of forehand and backhand strokes with a long-handled implement with power and accuracy.	Proficient Applies effective skill elements with minimal errors in technique. Often demonstrates the form of forehand and backhand strokes with a long-handled implement with power and accuracy.	Exemplary Applies effective skill elements with no observable errors in technique. Always demonstrates the mature form of forehand and backhand strokes with a long-handled implement with power and accuracy
Application of Strategies	Beginner Confines focus on sending and receiving the birdie. Movements are inconsistent with basic strategic play	Developing Uses some skills appropriately, but shows little evidence of variation in shot placement and defensive positioning.	Proficient Often applies effective offensive/defensive strategy without hesitation.	Exemplary Consistently applies effective offensive/defensive strategy without hesitation.
Application of Rules	Beginner Consistently demonstrates incorrect applications of rules, conventions, terminology, and or scoring. Relies on direction of others to play correctly.	Developing Demonstrates a general understanding of the game, but needs assistance from others to correctly apply rules, conventions, terminology or scoring	Proficient Applies major rules, conventions of play and terminology correctly, occasionally seeks confirmation from others. Announces score before serving.	Exemplary Applies rules, conventions of play and terminology without hesitation or observable rules. Announces score correctly before serving.
Activity Level	Beginner Student needs daily reminders to exert any effort and chooses not to put forth much, if any level of participation at all.	Developing Student needs occasional reminders to stay active and get involved in the game. Spurts of activity but nothing consistent.	Proficient Student is active at a medium-high level for most of the game.	Exemplary Student is putting forth a level of high exertion and is constantly moving without reminders for the entire game.
