Cohesiveness 10 pts	Excellent Student chooses one life experience and sticks with it throughout the assignment. Essay is sharp and well-focused.	Good Student chooses one life experience and sticks with it throughout most of the assignment. Essay is somewhat focused but wanders off topic here and there.	Needs Improvement Student could not focus on one life experience. Essay does not have a clear topic, supported by sharp, focused details.
Life Lesson 10 pts	Excellent Student draws an applicable life lesson from his/her chosen experience, showing the reader a larger truth.	Good Student attempts to draw an application to life but fails to do so clearly.	Needs Improvement Student simply relates a life experience and does not draw an application to life.
Description 10 pts	Excellent Student makes great use of description, creating apt word pictures to show rather than tell about his/her experience.	Good Student makes a good attempt at description but still falls into the trap to tell at different points.	Needs Improvement Student makes little to no attempt to use description; he/she simply tells a factual story.
Mechanics 50 %

Neatness/Format 5 pts	Excellent Student formats the essay using 1" margins all around, 10-12 pt., Times New Roman font. Student also includes a creative cover page.	Good Student formats the essay using all but one of the following: 1" margins all around, 10-12 pt., Times New Roman font. Student includes a cover page but without much care or effort.	Needs Improvement Student does not format the essay as requested, nor does he/she include a cover page.
Proofreading 5 pts	Excellent Student's essay contains very little if any errors in grammar or punctuation, and they do not interfere with the essay's readability.	Good Student's essay contains several errors in grammar and/or punctuation, and it sometimes interferes with the essay's readability.	Needs Improvement Student's essay contains many errors in grammar and punctuation and obviously did not take time to proofread or have anyone else help proofread the essay.
