Grammar/Syntax	Beginning Little to no subject-verb agreement; conjugates few or no verbs correctly	Developing Some subject-verb agreement; some control of grammar	Functional Subjects frequently agree with verbs; inconsistent control of grammar	Near Proficient Generally consistent subject-verb agreement; good control of grammar
Vocabulary	Beginning Uses mostly basic vocabulary words; frequent use of incorrect words	Developing Limited vocabulary-tends to use the same few words; often uses incorrect words	Functional Expanding vocabulary; uses a variety of words to express ideas; sometimes uses incorrect words; begins to self-correct errors	Near Proficient Large vocabulary; uses some infrequent words; occasionally uses incorrect words; often self-corrects errors
