The following rubric is a checklist for your current singing skills. During your lesson, you will sing an excerpt from a song from your repertoire. You will be expected to sing with pitch and rhythmic accuracy, good projection, clear articulation, proper tone quality and creative expression.

Pitch

Excellent

All pitches are correct. Starting point is always on pitch and clear. Singing matches throughout the whole melody in the low and high parts and it stay in a key.
Good

The vocal line follow the melodic contour, but there are few off pitch parts, sometimes too high or too low. Needs to work on the starting pitch for each part to match the pitch in a appropriate key.
Fair

Singing doesn't match the melody, but there are few vocal parts on pitch. Needs to work on melodic contour, listen to the melody and follow the contour of it to match the pitch.
Poor

Pitches are not clear. It sounds almost like speaking.Needs to work on developing singing voice, listen to one's own voice more attentively and identify if the pitches sung move up, down or stay the same.
Rhythm

Excellent

All rhythms were on the beat and of correct length
Good

Most of the rhythms were on the beat and of correct length, but some were too long or too short. Needs to work on being more accurate with length of the rhythms, making sure that each rhythm gets the right amount of beats.
Fair

Most of the rhythms were on the beat and correct length. Needs to work on being more accurate with the beat. Needs to sing or say the words while tapping the beat steadily.

Rhythm is not clear. Needs to work on identifying the beats and the rhythms, and, while listening to the song, tap the beat and clap the rhythms.
Projection

Excellent

A mouth is opened wide, and voice projected with confidence

Mouth is opened, but voice is not projected in some parts. Needs to work on projecting voice throughout the whole song.

Voice is not projected, even though mouth is sometimes opened. Needs to work on opening mouth for singing by dropping my jaw and producing a "bigger" sound.

Mouth isn't opened, and voice isn't projecting. Needs to work on opening mouth by dropping the jaw.
Lyrics/Articulation

Excellent

All the words are clear and lyrics are easy to understand
Good

The lyrics are understandable, but there are a few words that are not clear. Needs to work on the words that weren't clear enough, and sing words with accurate diction and clear sounds.

The words are not clear, even though a few parts are understandable. Needs to rehearse the lyrics by saying them with accurate diction and clear sounds.
Poor

The words are not clear. Needs to rehearse each word by saying them in different tempos with accurate diction.
Tone quality

Excellent

Voice has a pleasing and beautiful tone. It sounds natural and free.
Good

Most of the time, voice sounds natural and free, But there are some parts when voice gets too harsh, nasal or breathy. Needs to work on controlling tone in high and/or low registers.
Fair

Most of the time voice sounds too harsh, nasal, or breathy, but there are a few naturally pleasing sounds. Needs to work to produce a safe, natural sound in all registers.
Poor

Voice is not naturally pleasing. The tone is either too harsh, nasal, or breathy. Needs to work on controlling voice while singing, producing sounds without pushing, forcing, yelling or humming.
Posture/Expression

Excellent

Posture was naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, with relaxed shoulders and head. All gestures were aligned with the lyrics of the song and helped to express the mood of the music.
Good

Posture was naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, with relaxed shoulders and head, but there were a few gestures not aligned with the lyrics of the song, or they distracted listeners. Needs to work on finding the appropriate moves or gestures for the entire song that help to express the mood of the song.

Posture wasn't naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, with relaxed shoulders and head. But there were some good gestures that were aligned with the lyrics of the song, helping to express the mood of the music. Needs to work on maintaining posture while singing.

Posture wasn't naturally maintained with balanced feet on the floor, hands on sides, with relaxed shoulders and head. Gestures were not appropriate, distracting listeners. Needs to work on balancing posture and controlling body movements while singing.
