Understanding

*Understanding &
Identification of mathematical concepts of area and perimeter

Excellent

*Solution shows a deep understanding of the problem including the ability to identify the mathematical concepts of perimeter and area.
*Solution puts to use the underlying mathematical concepts.
Good

*Solution shows a broad understanding of the problem and the major concepts of perimeter and area necessary for the solution.*Solution addresses all the components of the task.
Fair

*Solution is incomplete indicating that parts of the problem of finding area and perimeter are not understood.
*Solution addresses some, but not all of the concepts of area and/or perimeter.
Poor

*No solution, or the solution is irrelevant
*Inappropriate concepts are applied and/or mathematical procedures of area and/or perimeter are not used.
*Solution does not address area and/or perimeter.
Strategies, Reasoning, Procedures

*Strategy
*Procedure
*Mathematical reasoning
*Verification of results
*Evaluates the reasonableness of solution

Excellent

*Uses a very efficient and shows strategy of area and perimeter that leads directly to the solution.*Engages in refined and complex reasoning.*Apples procedures accurately to solve the problem and verifies the results.*Evaluates the reasonableness of the solution.*Makes mathematical observations and connections.
Good

*Uses a strategy that leads to a correct solution.
*Uses effective mathematical reasoning.
*Uses correct mathematical procedures of area and perimeter.
Fair

*Uses a strategy that is particularly useful that leads to some of the solution.
*Some evidence of mathematical reasoning.
*Could not completely carry out procedures of area and/or perimeter.
*Does not achieve the correct answer although some parts may be correct.
Poor

*Omits evidence of a strategy or procedure, or uses an ineffective strategy.
*Does not use mathematical reasoning.
*Unable to resolve problem as there were too many errors in area and perimeter.
Communication

*Explanation, use of correct language.
*Mathematical representations
*Mathematical notation

Excellent

*Explains how the problem is solved that is clear, effective, and detailed.*Includes all steps so the reader does not have to infer how the solution was formed.
*Uses mathematical representations.*Uses precise and correct terminology and notation.
Good

*Has a clear explanation.
*Uses appropriate and accurate mathematical representation.
*Uses effective mathematical terminology and notation.
Fair

*Contains an incomplete explanation, or it may be presented in an unclear manner.
*Has used some appropriate mathematical representation.
*Used some mathematical terminology and notation that is appropriate to area and perimeter.
Poor

*Missing explanation of the solution, the explanation cannot be understood, or it is irrelevant to the problem.
*Uses incorrect mathematical representations (figures, diagrams, area, perimeter) of does not use it at all.
*Uses mathematical terminology and notation incorrectly.
