Developing
The learner can give a brief summary, orally or in writing, which include at least two key points, but which may also include non-essential facts for a summary.
For example, TL may tell how the story began and ended.
Applying
The learner can give a summary of a story orally or in writing, which includes beginning, middle, and end, key characters, conflict and resolution. TL appears to largely understand the reading selection, but doesn't grasp the author's message or purpose. TL may not see the focus and therefore give too much information.
Innovating
TL appears to have complete understanding of the reading selection and can summarize main points and determine a theme. TL keeps the summary focused.

TL can correctly describe the conflict and solution and why these are important to the story. TL can support answer with details.
