Exceeds Standards

Students working together grid site to exact specifications provided.
Meets Standards

Students work together to grid site but specifications are slightly off.
Progression Towards Standards

Students may work together but are sidetracked and focus is off a bit and specifications are off.
Does Not Completely Meet Standards

Students are working together at points. Not serious about grid. Grid is off specs.
Not Meet standards at all.

Students not working together. Not serious. Not trying. Grid is either off or not complete.
Phase 1 Dig: Top Soil/Grass

Exceeds Standards

Students properly take top layer of grass and soil off while being careful for those around them. They are serious and focused. Completely clear top level off.
Meets Standards

Students properly take top layer of grass and soil off a little careless. Serious for the most part and mostly focused. Top level completely cleared.
Progression Towards Standards

Students do not properly remove top level of grass and soil. Are more careless in approach. More focus is lost. Top level mostly cleared.
Does Not Completely Meet Standards

Students do not properly remove top level and are very careless in approach. Much focus is lost. Top layers not cleared.
Not Meet standards at all.

Students do not remove top layers properly. Very careless in approach. No focus on task. No clearing of top layers complete.
Phase 2: Finer Digging

Exceeds Standards

Students use proper tools to clear dirt from grid. Students take their time. Dirt is removed and brought to a specified area.

Students mostly use proper tools to clear dirt from grid. Students mostly take their time. Dirt is removed to specified area.
Progression Towards Standards

Students use some incorrect tools/techniques. Students are rushing a bit. Dirt is removed but not always to correct area.

Students mostly use improper tools. Students are more rushed in their work. Dirt is not properly disposed.

Students use improper tools. Not following direction, rushinig through and not taking digging seriously. Dirt is haphazardly disposed.
Artifact Recovery/Recording

Exceeds Standards

Students use proper techniques to recover artifacts: take their time, use brushes, record where artifact was found and remove from ground carefully. Place in marked bag for catalogue.
Meets Standards

Students mostly use proper technique to recover artifacts with a little exceptions. Recording and bagging done properly.
Progression Towards Standards

Students using some improper techniques to recover artifacts. Students forget to record where some artifacts were found. Bagging and IDing artifacts is ok.
Does Not Completely Meet Standards

Students using many improper techniques to recover artifacts. Most artifacts are not recorded or bagged.
Not Meet standards at all.

Students digging improperly. Not following proper procedure for artifact recovery. Not taking process seriously.
Clean up

Exceeds Standards

All tools are brought outside and handed out. All tools are cleaned after each day. All tools returned. Site is left safe.
Meets Standards

All tools are brought outside and handed out. tools and site are mostly clean after each day.
Progression Towards Standards

Teacher has to remind students to bring out tools. Tools are handed out. Many tools not cleaned. Site is a little dirty.
Does Not Completely Meet Standards

Students are a bit argumentative about bringing tools out. Some are not using tools properly. Many tools not cleaned and returned. Site is pretty dirty.
Not Meet standards at all.

Students refuse to take tools out, hand them out or clean them. Tools are missing. Students refuse to clean site after each day. Students not taking dig serious nor their responsibilities.
