Connections Does the student make a text-to- text, text-to-self, or text-to-world connection?	Needs Improvement The student does not make a connection to the book. No elaboration written in journal.	Good The student makes one to two connections to the book and elaborates somewhat on those connections.	Excellent The student thinks more about the book, and how it relates to him/herself, another book, and the world. The student makes two to three connections to the book.
Language and Conventions	Needs Improvement Student does not use punctuation or uppercase letters in his/her response. Student does not spell word wall words correctly.	Good Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly most of the time. Student spells most word wall words correctly.	Excellent Student uses punctuation and uppercase letters correctly in response. Student spells all word wall words correctly.
Summary Students write a summary for the chapter they have read. They will list the Chapter, Pages Read and Prediction for the next chapter.	Needs Improvement Student response has chapter, but no pages read and a prediction for the next chapter.
