Spelling errors are frequent and repeated. 5 or 6 spelling errors. Spelling errors may interfere with understanding.

More than 6 spelling errors. Spelling gets in the way of understanding the content.
Punctuation
Excellent
Uses basic punctuation rules accurately. Shows knowledge of end of sentence punctuation, and basic comma rules.
Capitalization rules are accurately used. 1 or 2 errors noted.
Good
Uses basic punctuation rules somewhat accurately. End of sentence punctuation rules are mostly correct, but commas are randomly used. Shows understanding of capitalization, but not used consistently.

Fair
Punctuation is random, and only the easiest rules show awareness of correct use. 5 or 6 errors.
Poor
Lack of punctuation, or numerous errors in punctuation affect the readability of the text. More than 6 errors.
Grammar and usage
Excellent
Grammar and usage are alway correct and enhance the writing clarity and style. No errors noted.
Good
Grammar and usage is good, but does not always add to the style of the writing. 1 or 2 grammar errors.
Fair
Problems with grammar and usage are not serious enough to distort the meaning, but may not be correct or accurately applied all the time. 3 or 4 grammar errors.
Poor
Errors in grammar and usage are very noticable, frequent, and affect meaning.
Sentence Fluency
Excellent
Writing has an easy flow, with strong varied sentence structures. There are varied and purposeful sentence beginnings.
Good
Sentences get the job done, constructed correctly, and sound. Sentence structures attempt to vary, as do sentence beginnings.
Fair
Sentence structures are simplistic and monotonous. Need complexity, but they do make sense.
Poor
Sentences do not make sense, ramble, begin the same way, and endlessly connect to others.
