Introduction/Conclusion	Superior Clear statement explaining topic and why chosen. Clear statement of conclusions (what was learned).	Good Either introduction or conclusion is inadequately stated (does not introduce or summarize elements of topic).	Fair Either introduction or conclusion is missing entirely. Reads in a "bookish" fashion with little attraction for reader.	Poor Both introduction and conclusion are missing (paper begins with topic as if copied from reference used). Writer not in touch with reader.
Development	Superior The topic is well researched and comprehensive and is developed in an orderly fashion. Writer shows aptitude in science.	Good The topic is researched but parts seem to be lacking or inadequately explained.	Fair The topic shows little development and there are many parts inadequately developed.	Poor The topic shows little development and research, is filled with opinion only, and/or is off topic entirely.
Organization	Superior Well organized, follows a logical development of ideas. Uses appropriate transitions while keeping within topic.	Good Somewhat organized. Some logical development and transitions.	Fair Little organization. Scattered thoughts; lacks logical development and appropriate transitions.	Poor No organization seen. Often illogical. Totally lacks development and use of transitions.
Citations/Bibliography	Superior Citations are used throughout paper and paper includes accurate & complete bibliography. Each source in bibliography is cited at least once in paper.	Good Citations are used throughout paper but do not match all sources listed in bibliography. Bibliography adequate but all sources apparently not used.	Fair Either citations or bibliography missing or inadequately presented.	Poor No citations or bibliography used and the paper is considered to be plagiarized and will be returned to student ungraded. MUST BE RESUBMITTED.
Format/Mechanics/Length/Paper	Superior Recyled paper required (printed 2 sides). Standard font size (11 or 12) used, proper margins. No grammatical, punctuation, spelling errors.
