Grammar	Poor Frequent or blatant errors occur in usage, punctuation, and spelling—including commonly used words.	Fair Errors occur in mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling, but commonly used words are spelled correctly.	Good Generally follows the conventions of mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling.	Excellent Few, if any, convention errors occur in mechanics, usage, punctuation, and spelling.
Organization	Poor The response may have an organizational patter, but it may lack a sense of completeness or closure.	Fair The organizational pattern usually includes a beginning, middle, and ending, but the elements may be brief.	Good An organizational pattern is apparent.	Excellent The organizational pattern provides for a logical progression of ideas.
Focus	Poor The writing addresses the topic but may lose focus by including extraneous or loosely related ideas.	Fair The writing is focused on the topic and includes few, if any, loosely related ideas.	Good The writing is focused on the topic.	Excellent The writing is focused and purposeful, and it reflects insight into the writing situation.
Purpose	Poor Development of support is uneven	Fair The support is consistently developed, but it needs to be more specific.	Good The support is developed through ample use of specific details and examples	Excellent Development of support is substantial, specific, relevant, and concrete.
