Format	Poor More than four components of the business letter are missing and/ or formatted incorrectly.	Fair Three to four components of the business letter are missing and/or formatted incorrectly.	Good One to two components of the business letter are missing and /or formatted incorrectly.	Outstanding All components of the business letter are present and in the correct place.
Tone (Word Choice)	Poor Tone is casual and conversational throughout the letter.	Fair Tone is too conversational or casual in several places.	Good Tone is mostly professional but may not be firm or professional in some areas.	Outstanding Tone is professional, polite, respectful, and firm.
Organization	Poor The letter seems to be a collection of unrelated sentences. It is difficult to determine the letter's purpose.	Fair Ideas are somewhat organized, but it takes more than one reading to determine the letter's purpose.	Good Ideas are expressed in a fairly clear manner, but there may be confusion in some areas.	Outstanding Ideas are expressed clearly throughout the letter
Conventions	Poor The writer makes 5 or more errors in capitalization, punctuation, or spelling.	Fair The writer makes 3-4 errors in capitalization, punctuation, or spelling.	Good The writer makes 1-2 errors in capitalization, punctuation, or spelling.	Outstanding The writer makes no errors in capitalization, punctuation, or spelling.
