Trait 1 - Ideas
Excellent
* Writer uses a narrow topic that is easily controlled.
* Appropriate details give the reader meaningful information that is not obvious.
* Details are accurate and support the main idea.
* The writer is knowlegeable about the subject and the ideas are new and original
Good
* The writer uses a broader topic but the reader is able to figure out where the paper is going.
* Details are not as supportive of the main idea.
* Ideas are somewhat clear but are lacking in originality and strength.
*The writer shows knowledge of the subject but does not support generalized statements with many details.
Needs Improvement
* The writer's topic is not clearly defined.
* Details are limited and there is no in-depth explanation
* It is very hard to identify a main idea
* The paper is very repetitive or is constantly restating the same thing.
Trait 2 - Organization
Excellent
* My great opening paragraph draws the reader in and is at least 3-7 sentences long. The conclusion wraps the paper up with a wish, hope, dream, or summary and is at least 3-7 sentences long.
* Well used transitions connect ideas.
* The paper is placed in a logical sequence.
Good
* The introduction and conclusion are clear but do not provide anticipation or a complete wrap up of ideas.
* Most transitions are used properly but the connections made are not always clear. I used 2-3 opening sentences in my opening and closing.
* The sequence is not always consistent or off track.
* Spends too much time on minor details.
Needs Improvement
*The introduction and conclusion are not clearly written - does not tie up loose ends.

Trait 4 - Word Choice
Excellent
* The reader easily understands what the writer means.
* The writers use of verbs animate the story, as well as, the use of particular nouns add depth.
* The story shows that the writer has put in a lot of effort to use the right words or phrases to catch the reader's attention.
Good
* The writer just tells the story but does not catch the attention.
* The writer attempts to use various words but overloads the story so much that the meaning is lost.
* The writer did not put in a lot of effort to find the best word or phrase but instead wrote down the first thing that came into their mind.
Needs Improvement
* The writer uses a very limited amount of vivid language or none at all.
* The writer's word choice doesn't fit the story or has been used incorrectly.
