Introduction	Poor There is no introduction or elements are missing OR the student has used the "In my paper I will tell you about format."	Fair Paper has an average introduction--there is a hook, thesis, and plan. (6 - 9 sentences)	Good Paper has a complete introduction with a hook, thesis, and plan. It has at least 10 sentences and is interesting and confident.
Body	Poor Paper is not divided into paragraphs OR has very rudimentary paragraphs which do not answer the prompt.	Fair Paper has three paragraphs which give a basic explanation of the lessons learned and there is some support with evidence from the book, but not from THROUGHOUT the book.	Good Paper has a body of at least three paragraphs which thoroughly explain the lessons learned and uses specific evidence from THROUGHOUT the book to support the topic statements.
Conclusion	Poor There is no conclusion or elements are missing OR the student has used the "In my paper I have told you about" format.	Fair There is a basic summary and restatement of thesis which uses mostly the same words as the introduction.	Good Conclusion sums up the evidence, restates the thesis in a different way, and ends the paper in a convincing manner. Leaves the reader thinking or feeling something.
Voice	Poor Paper shows no evidence of being written by a "real kid".	Fair There is some evidence of voice, but paper is mostly bland and uninteresting.	Good Voice is confident and sophisticated. There is evidence that a "real kid" wrote the paper. Vocabulary is high level.
Flow	Poor Paper is choppy, disorganized, and confusing.	Fair There is some use of transitions and some evidence of sentence variety. However, paper is somewhat choppy and may be hard to follow.	Good The paragraphs in the paper flow--transitions are used and the paper is arranged logically. A variety of sentence structures are used.
Mechanics	Poor There are so many spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar usage errors that the paper is hard to read.	Fair There are several errors, but they do not detract from the meaning of the paper.	Good There are very few erros in spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar usage, and the ones that are there do not detract from the paper's meaning.
