Shows inconsistent care for books: sometimes takes care of books, but other times does not.

Shows care for books 80% of the time: Is careful with pages, holds book correctly, uses it appropriately for reading purposes.
Excellent

Shows care for books 95%-100% of the time: Is careful with pages, holds book correctly, uses it appropriately for reading purposes, places book back to it's original location.
Book selection

Poor

Does not follow any guidelines when choosing a book.
Fair

Chooses books mostly based on interest. Sometimes, uses the guidelines to help select a book.
Good

Uses the guidelines most of the time to help select a book, but may stick to one genre or interest.
Excellent

Uses the guidelines 95%-100% of the time as a checklist to select appropriate books based on level, interest, genre, purpose, etc.
Independent Reading

Poor

Does not focus on his/her own stories during independent reading. Materials are scattered. Flips through pages, with little reading. Distracts other students.
Fair

Little focus during independent reading. Has materials, but may not use it consistently. Uses a quick pace when reading instead of thinking about text. Sometimes distracts other students.
Good

Shows focus on text 80% of the time during independent reading. Has materials and attends to them appropriately. Tries not to distract other students.
Excellent

Reads independently 95%-100% of the time. Shows focus and concentration of both text and pictures. Reviews materials to gain full understanding of each reading. Does not distract other students.
