The Lead

Level 1 Inadequate

The lead, or attention grabber, is completely absent. The speech does not use any particular lead technique to get the reader/listener interested.
Level 2 Developing

The speech does not begin with a strong lead. A lead that was discussed in class was implemented, but it was not used very well.
Level 3 Mastered

The speech begins with a solid lead. It effectively uses one of the types of leads that we learned in class. It is interesting.
Level 4 Excels

The speech begins with a strong, clear lead or attention grabber. It uses a personal experience or story, a surprising fact or statistic, a contrast, a question, a problem, a shocking or interesting fact to begin the essay. This effectively pulls the reader into the piece and makes him/her want to read more.
Introduction

Level 1 Inadequate

The speech does not begin with a clear introduction. The thesis statement may not be in the introduction at all, or it may not be clear. The three main points are missing.

The essay begins with an introduction. The thesis statement is somewhat clear. The three main points are somewhat clear.
Level 3 Mastered

The essay begins with a relatively clear introduction. The thesis statement is part of the introduction, but it could be clearer/stronger. The three main points are stated, but they could also be clearer/stronger.
Level 4 Excels

The essay begins with a strong, clear introduction. The thesis statement is very clear and obvious, and the author has briefly stated the three main points.
1st Body Paragraph

Level 1 Inadequate

The first body paragraph is not clear enough. It attempts to support the thesis but does not do so clearly. Too much necessary information has been left out. Not enough specific details and examples have been used. Transitional words have probably not been used.

Level 3 Mastered

The writer's speech is organized and needs little improvement. There is evidence of five separate paragraphs, and some transitional words/phrases are present.
Level 4 Excels

The speech is extremely organized, and all five paragraphs are solid. Transitional words and phrases are evident in every (or almost every) paragraph.
