General knowledge and understanding of animal form/function, cell biology, ecology, evolution, genetics, molecular biology, taxonomy, and plant form/function.

Little understanding demonstrated. Student was not able to answer most questions, had great difficulty generating answers, even with assistance, and answered very slowly.
Depth of knowledge

Student demonstrates in-depth knowledge in at least a few areas probed.

In at least three areas, student answered questions in depth, going into detail in terms of structure, function, mechanisms, theory. Student took off with questions posed.

In at least two areas, student answered questions in depth, going into detail in terms of structure, function, mechanisms, theory.

In at least one area, student answered questions in some depth, going into detail in terms of structure, function, mechanisms, theory.

Student was not able to go into any detail concerning any of the areas probed.
Quantitative skills

General knowledge of basic statistics, calculations for chemical solutions, interpretation of graphs and other quantitative skills appropriate to the student’s area of study.

High pass

Student was comfortable discussing statistical concepts, including them in discussion of general concepts, could interpret graphs and was able to perform any calculations.
Pass

Student was able to answer questions concerning statistical concepts, could interpret graphs, and was able to perform calculations. Student may have required some assistance in getting started.
Low Pass

Student was able to generate an answer for questions concerning statistical concepts with some coaching. Student could provide some interpretation for a graph. Student performed calculations with some difficulty and required assistance.
Fail

Student had great difficulty generating an answer for questions concerning statistical concepts, and great difficulty performing calculations, even with assistance.
Scientific method

Student demonstrates understanding of the scientific method, including ability to design an experiment and analyze scientific data.

High pass

Student used the scientific method to generate hypotheses and design an experiment to test one of those hypotheses. Student was able to summarize and interpret data.

Student described how the scientific method can be used with a specific example, using a logical progression. Student was able to summarize and interpret data presented.
Low Pass

Student described the steps of the scientific method but not necessarily in order. Student needed some assistance to summarize and interpret data presented.

The student was not comfortable with the material discussed and had great difficulty answering many questions. The student required a great deal of coaching to answer any questions.
