Tone is consistently clear and focused throughout the range of the instrument. A truly characteristic sound for the instrument.
Excellent

Tone is clear and focused through the normal playing range. An extreme note in the range sometimes causes the quality to be less controlled. Errors do not detract from the overall performance.
Good

Tone is somewhat clear and focused, but sometimes the tone is uncontrolled in the normal playing range. Errors occasionally detract from the overall performance.
Fair

The tone is often not clear or focused regardless of range due to the need for stronger embouchure and breath support. Errors frequently detract from the overall performance.
Poor

Tone is consistently lacking quality due to a poorly formed or weak embouchure and/or no breath support. Poor posture may be evident. Errors consistently detract from the overall performance.
Articulation Accuracy

Superior

Articulation is accurate with the markings on the music and consistent with the style that is being performed.
Excellent

Articulation is accurate with the markings on the music but is not consistent with the style being performed. Isolated errors do not detract from the overall performance.
Good

Articulations are somewhat accurate but not characteristic to the style of the music being performed. Frequent or repeated errors occasionally detract from the performance.
Fair

Articulations are usually ignored. No style is present. Errors frequently detract from the overall performance.
Poor

No attempt is made with articulations. All notes are slurred. No style is present. Errors consistently detract from the overall performance.
Dynamics

Superior

Performs with creative nuance and style in response to the core. All dynamic levels were accurate and relative to each other. Very expressive and effective performance.
Excellent

All dynamic levels were accurate. Room for improvement with creative nuances within the style. Errors do not detract from the musical effect of the overall performance.
Good

Dynamics were somewhat accurate, but contrast levels were minimal. Did not develop an apparent musical effect. Frequent or repeated errors occasionally detract from the overall performance.
Fair

Dynamics were usually ignored. Errors frequently detract from the musical effect of the overall performance.
