This rubric will guide students through their preparation and evaluation of their performance assessments. This document takes into account that students are beginners.

Sound/Tone

Minimal

An unfocused "fuzzy" sound is produced on most notes. Student is not able to correct this with teacher guidance.
Basic

An unfocused "fuzzy" sound is produced on half the notes. Student is able to correct the other half with teacher guidance.
Proficient

A focused sound is produced on most notes without teacher intervention. Student is able to adjust after own personal evaluation.
Advanced

A focused, strong sound is produced on all notes.
Rhythm

Minimal

A clear lack of a steady tempo is demonstrated. Student is not able to maintain a steady beat with teacher direction.
Basic

Most rhythms are unsteady. Student is able to perform with a steady beat half the time with teacher direction.
Proficient

Most rhythms are steady. Student is able to fix some rhythms without teacher intervention/direction.
Advanced

All rhythms are steady and correct.
Pitch Accuracy

Minimal

Few notes are played with the correct fingering/embouchure control. Student is not able to retain pattern with teacher direction.
Basic

Most notes are inaccurate (wrong fingerings/slide positions). Student is able to play short sections with teacher direction.
Proficient

Most notes/pitches are played correctly. Student is able to correct mistakes without teacher intervention.
Advanced

All pitches are played correctly (fingering/slide position/embouchure).
Technique

Minimal

There are many errors in posture (student is slouched, feet are not flat on the floor, ankles are crossed), hand position, and stand height (too low or too high). Student is unable to correct these with teacher direction.
Basic

Some techniques are correct, and the student is able to correct one or more with teacher direction.
Proficient

Most techniques are correct, and student is able to fix errors without teacher intervention.
Advanced

Student is sitting up straight, with both feet flat on the floor. Hand position particular to the instrument is correct. The music stand is adjusted so that the music being read is at eye level.
Articulation

Minimal

There is no separation between notes; tonguing is not being used. Percussion sticking does not match the assigned pattern. Student is unable to correct these with teacher direction.
Basic

There is some separation between notes; student is able to fix these errors with teacher direction. Percussion is able to fix sticking with teacher direction.
Proficient

Most of the notes are clearly articulated, with a "dah" sound (rather than a "TUT" sound). Percussion has most sticking correct. Student is able to fix without teacher intervention.
Advanced

Tonguing and sticking are accurate for entire selection.
Preparedness

Minimal

Did not have music or instrument, and or arrived very late
Basic

Had instrument but did not have music. Arrived just in the nick of time.
Proficient

Had instrument and music but arrived a bit late.
Advanced

Had music, instrument, and arrived early to tune. I was ready to go!
