Journal Writing Rubric
	GOOD 3 pts	FAIR 2 pts	POOR 1 pts
Topic Sentence	GOOD Student has a clear topic sentence that relates to what he/she will write about.	FAIR Student has a topic sentence that somewhat relates to what he/she will write about.	POOR Student has no topic sentence.
Closing Sentence	GOOD Student has a clear closing sentence that clearly relates to what he/she wrote.	FAIR Student has a closing sentence that somewhat relates to what he/she wrote.	POOR Student has no closing sentence.
Details	GOOD Multiple details are used to explain or support. Tries to capture and keep the reader's attention for most of the piece.	FAIR Details lack support. Few details are used, not enough content to support the topic. Little to capture and keep the reader's attention.	POOR Details do not match prompt or no details given. Does not attempt to capture or keep the reader's attention.
Complete Sentences	GOOD Writing has all complete sentences.	FAIR Writing has mostly complete sentences.	POOR Writing has many incomplete sentences.
Spelling	GOOD Grade appropriate words are spelled correctly.	FAIR Grade appropriate words are mostly spelled correctly, a few errors.	POOR Grade appropriate words contain many spelling errors.
Capitalization	GOOD All sentences are begun with a capital letter.	FAIR Most sentences are begun with a capital letter.	POOR Many sentences do not begin with a capital letter.
Punctuation	GOOD All punctuation is correct.	FAIR Most punctuation is correct.	POOR Little punctuation is correct.
