Style.	Poor Author' style unrecognizable	Mediocre Some evidence of the author's style, but the student's voice is clearly dominant	Good The author's style is recognizable. The author's voice is still visible.	Excellent The author's style is easily recognizable.
Setting	Poor - You do not know where the story takes place, you are completely lost.	Mediocre - You somewhat know where things are taking place.	Good - You know where things are taking place most of the time.	Excellent - You know exactly where everything is taking place. - The setting is described so well that you feel like you are there.
Plot	Poor Does not reflect an event in the author's life or is incomprehensible.	Mediocre The plot is hard to follow; conflict is unclear, or missing one or more elements.	Good Contains all the elements:exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.	Excellent Contains all the elements and draws the reader in.
Character Description	Poor - You hardly know anything about the character and you hardly know what they look like. - You hardly know how they act.	Mediocre - You know somewhat about the character and you somewhat know what they look like. - You know how they act somewhat.	Good - You know about the characters and you know what they look like. - You know how they mostly act.
