Designing and Building a Hydraulic or Pneumatic Model
Hydraulic Project
Hydraulic systems use fluids that are confined under pressure. They are used in many machines. For this culminating task, you will use your knowledge of fluids, density and hydraulic systems to design a machine. Your machine can accomplish any task that you decide.

Planning and Design
Level 1
Student had a very rough sketch. Design was not labeled or did not include dimensions.
Level 2
Student had a basic sketch.
Design was not labeled or did not include dimensions.
Level 3
Student had a detailed
sketch, but it was not clearly labelled.
Level 4
Student had a detailed sketch including dimensions.
Building and Testing
Level 1
Does not work collaboratively or demonstrate teamwork with group members.
Does not use problem solving to overcome challenges and mistakes.
Rarely cleans work area and often wastes materials.
Rarely cleans up completely and on time.
Level 2
Some success in demonstrating collaboration and teamwork with group members.
Sometime uses problem solving to overcome challenges and mistakes.
Sometimes cleans work area and tries to not waste materials.
Occasionally cleans up completely and on time.
Level 3
Demonstrates collaboration and teamwork with group members.
Consistently demonstrates problem solving to overcome challenges and mistakes.
Consistently cleans work area and does not waste materials.
Consistently cleans up completely and on time.
Level 4
Consistently demonstrates collaboration and teamwork with group members.
Exceeds expectations when problem solving to overcome challenges and mistakes.
Always cleans work area and does not waste materials.
Always cleans up completely and on time.
Construction Quality
Level 1
Construction was incomplete. Student did not finish the project or complete the task to match any of the descriptors for this criterion.
Level 2
Quality of construction needs improvement or did not meet expectations (i.e. secure joints, stability).
Many details need
refinement for a stronger product. Some failures during demonstration due to the quality of construction.
Level 3
Quality of construction is generally consistent with expectations (i.e. secure joints, stability). The machine did not fail during the demonstration due to quality of construction.
Level 4
Quality of construction is consistent (or exceeds) expectations (i.e. secure joints, stability). Machine is designed in a robust manner so that no single part or element will fail.
Display Board Requirements
Level 1
The student has demonstrated very little or no understanding of project requirements.
Level 2
The project meets some of the requirements outlined in the given drawing.
Level 3
The project meets most requirements outlined in the given drawing.
Level 4
The project meets requirements outlined in the specifications for design elements. The project includes innovative design features that exceed project specifications.
Demonstration of the Project
Level 1
The student has demonstrated very little or no understanding of the topic. Only one point of movement is evident on the device. The device is not able to accomplish the outlined task.
Level 2
The student has had some success in demonstrating the machine successfully. The hydraulic device demonstrates two points of movement. It is not able to accomplish the outlined task.
Level 3
The student demonstrates the machine successfully. There are three points of movement on the device; however, the device is not consistently able to accomplish the outlined task.
Level 4
The student demonstrates the machine successfully. The hydraulic device demonstrates three points of movement and effectively accomplishes the outlined task.
Presentation
Level 1
The student does not participate in the presentation. The student is not able to communicate how the project works.
Level 2
The student communicates information about the project during the demonstration, but does not use scientific vocabulary.
Level 3
The student attempts to communicate scientific information using some scientific language.
Level 4
The student communicates scientific information using scientific language.
